PSHE and RSE - Becoming Citizens
At Ghost Hill we seek to develop pupils into citizens by adequately preparing them for life in modern Britain. We have chosen to use the Jigsaw PSHE curriculum to meet the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for pupils.
Jigsaw is a mindful approach to PSHE and is a progressive and spiral scheme of learning. In planning the lessons, Jigsaw PSHE ensures that learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year as appropriate. Learning is based upon six units - defined as puzzles. The Curriculum Progression Maps below also show how Jigsaw PSHE covers the new England RSHE statutory guidance (DfE 2025) giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. .
Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-7 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation.
The units covered support children to become better citizens in their world. They also link well to our School Values ‘Try Hard, Be Brave, Be You’ and our Behaviour Rules ‘Ready, Respectful, Safe’. Teachers and children notice and discuss the links to Character Education and our chosen Character Virtues: Curiosity, Honesty, Courage, Teamwork and Community Awareness as part of the Circle Time discussions during Jigsaw PSHE. It is for these reasons that Ghost Hill chose the Jigsaw scheme of work to develop our children as citizens.
